WAIT HOUSE IS BRITISH???
I’m always shocked to find that an actor who plays an American in a movie I’m fond of, such as Sam Neill in Jurassic Park, is British or Irish or Australian. It’s kind of jarring to hear them speaking in their real accent. I’m also pretty impressed that they can pull it off so well, but I think that’s due to my fallacious tendency to think that Americans don’t have an accent.
First, please realize that, though I do not own a television, I am a big fan of House, M.D., which I watch via Netflix. Second, please realize that I barely pay attention to pop culture. Anyone should know that. I only know the show exists because Mathias told me about it, and I only decided to try it out because I read that he gets a pet rat in season 2. Now, of course, I’m hooked.
But guess what.
I just found out that the actor who plays Gregory House, M.D., is British!
As I type this, Kevin is laughing at the fact that I didn’t already know this. Perhaps several of you are also laughing. Please stop.
House is played by Hugh Laurie, who, as Kevin just informed me, is the Laurie part of Fry and Laurie. Now, I am aware of the existence of Fry and Laurie. They are admired by skeptics, and I’ve seen clips of their shows on Skep Chick, I just didn’t realize they were the same person!
But now I can totally see it:

My first reaction was actually disappointment, but then I realized that that doesn’t make sense.

Rockfish are one of a very few species flocks, at over 100 species within the genus Sebastes.
They have internal fertilization and have ben proven to recieve some nutrition from the mother before birth (besides that which is within the egg itself) making them viviparous
There are species of rockfish that are known to live over 100yrs.. and even 200yrs and they can take decades just to reach sexual maturity
All members have some amount of venom in their spines
I LOVE rockfish ;)

I won’t laugh (out loud) at you. Hugh Laurie is also famous for being in seasons 2, 3, and 4 of Rowan Atkinson’s “Blackadder” series.
He also has a cameo in “SpiceWorld,” the Spice Girls movie!!!!!!! OMGOOSES!

So do rockfish have swimbladders or not? In my training at the aquarium I was told first that they do, then that they don’t, by the same person. I think she may have misspoken on the second one, b/c don’t their swimbladders rupture if you take them out of water?

Hugh Laurie is also famous for being the sexy dirty old man in my secret dreams.
SECRET DREAMS.

They do have gas bladders, that’s why when you bring them up from depth, they usually have their stomach everted as the gas in the gas blader expands and since it is physoclistous it can’t escape. It causes te GB to expand and force the stomach out through the mouth (basically).
The gas in the blood and other fluids expands too.. explosive decompression.. affects the eyes (pop eye).
Wel that’s the gist of it anyhow.
Oddly, these fish can look like they’re done for, but depending on species and initial depth, if you get them back down to depth within a short timeframe, they can have a reasonable chance of survival…

Hi Jason, I love your blog and you rcomments over at the nuthouse!
I do not follow pop culture much myself, but I do love House also.
Hearing Hugh Laurie interviewed is always weird becuase I keep thinking he’s faking a British accent! :)

Why thank you, flinging. I might need to stay away from Ray for a while. I go every few months and comment as much as I can until it upsets me too much. Well, “upsets” may be the wrong word. I get distracted by it to the exclusion of more important things.
But I like your blog too! So far, at least!

As you can imagine, I love that clip. We discussed it early on in the life of GrammarBlog.

You do have a passing interest in British Studies, don’t you.
Should I go to London? It’s the only place in Europe I have any interest in going. I want to connect with my roots.
