Vacay!

This year Jennifer and I will be driving from Seattle to Salt Lake City, to Denver, to Roswell, to Phoenix, to Los Angeles, and back home, with stops in between for whatever we feel like doing.

Does anyone have any recommendations?  Anything you think we should absolutely not miss?

Very cool (and HOT) trip you have planned…

Be sure to stop and visit:
    PHOENIX/SCOTTSDALE, AZ
    SANTA FE, NM,
    MT. LEMMON (Arizona),
El Charro Cafe (original location) in Tucson, AZ
    Saguro National Forest (AZ)

Carrie & I took a road trip down to Santa Fe and back a few years ago, and it was a lot of fun. We made it farther than Salt Lake City in one day before we had to stop to sleep!

I highly recommend Hole N’ The Rock in southeast Utah (near Moab). It might be a little out of your way, though. http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/2229

    Thanks Chris W!

    @ Chris:
We’re actually planning on getting to SLC in one day, and maybe spending one day in that city. I couldn’t believe how close it is to Seattle! I’m not used to living that close to SLC!

Why is the apostrophe after the “N” in “Hole N’ The Rock”? Is it supposed to mean “Hole No The Rock”? That’s the second time today I found a mistake like that. Here is the first: http://restraininorder.blogspot.com/2008/03/bwahahahaahaaaaaaa.html

I am sooo jealous! That will be lots of fun.

The Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is located in Angel Canyon in Utah. You guys should go. I have heard it’s very beautiful. AND they take care of lots of abused and abandoned animals….EVEN RABBITS! They have cabins you can rent there too. Here’s the link: http://www.bestfriends.org/

  7. Jason Says:

That looks awesome Leslie, but it’s a 10 hour deviation from our route :-(

  8. Leslie Says:

I wondering how far away it was, I never found an actual city. Oh well. :(

    I find this reassuring: http://www.neatorama.com/2008/05/21/16376/

Hey Jason, this is Sara from Scum. Ben and I are moving to Denver in the middle of June. We can show you around if that is when you’ll be there, if you want.
Also, driving on the Pacific Coast Highway through California instead of I-5 has much better scenery.

  11. Jason Says:

Thanks Sara! We will be in Denver is July, so we’d love to hook up with you! We also might be hanging out with Leanor Ortega.

We actually went down 101 last year, and it was great! We’re planning on doing the drive from L.A. to Seattle in two days like we did last year.

Colorado Springs has a train museum, which was cool when I was five. Also, you should probably see the Grand Canyon, pref. at sunset. Freaking rad.

  13. Owen Says:

Sarah, lived in Colorado for quite a while. She says you should stop by the New Belgium brewery and to look out for prairie dogs… take a picture of one, or better yet - bring one home.

    Also rocky mountain national park.

  14. Jason Says:

Holy ess!! Prairie dogs = HELL YEAH!

  15. Mr. Spider Says:

If you’re stopping in Tucson, don’t miss the Sonoran Desert Museum. It’s really more of a desert zoo than museum. In Phoenix, I guess the Heard Museum is pretty cool and I definitely recommend stopping by Rito’s for great Mexican food. Also, if you stop by Tempe (just south of Scottsdale, home to the rich and famous), you can view the lake that we put in the bed of a river, because we dammed the river.

  16. Shontell Says:

    Hi Jason,

I’d recommend Crater Lake and Carlsbad Caverns National Park. We visited both locations last year while on our road trip. ABSOLUTELY STUNNING.

  17. Jason Says:

    Hey Shontellio!!

Carlsbad is one of the main points of this trip! We are very excited about it. Did you see the bats?

  18. Chris Says:

A really good Mexican restaurant in Tucson is Mi Nidito. It’s the kind of place that has photos of celebrities up on the wall, and you can actually buy a postcard of Bill Clinton eating there. It’s also very tasty: http://www.minidito.net/

  19. Shontell Says:

No!! Lydia didn’t like the dark so we had to leave before we could see any. =(

  20. Tofer Says:

I will have to try Mi Nidito next time I am in Tucson :)

  21. Will Von Wizzlepig Says:

if you stop in Portland, OR, make sure you hit at least one of these-

The Kennedy School (Memenamins bought an old gradeschool and now it’s a bar/restuarant/theater/bed&breakfast)

    Half & Half (coffee shop)

Ladd’s Addition (the blocks between 800 SE Hawthorne and 2000 SE Division, a really pretty an interesting little neighborhood)

Just Be Toys / Compound, 107 NW 5th Ave , cool toy shop and gallery with other cool stuff nearby. but also creepy crackheads, so, stash your CDs under the seat.
